Your First Chiropractic Visit

Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness welcomes first-time chiropractic patients.  New chiropractic patients often arrive frustrated, having tried other treatment methods and not found relief from their pain or discomfort.  Chiropractic takes a systemic approach to care, meaning the whole body and the body’s ability to heal itself are considered in every case. This is why your initial consultation and assessment with a chiropractor is especially important.  We will work to understand your goals for treatment, and take a very detailed record of your current condition using a physical exam and sometimes x-rays.  From there we can form a treatment plan to target any issues and improve overall health.
What surprises most new patients is that chiropractic does not incorporate drugs as part of treatment.  Chiropractic focuses on treating the root cause of any pain, rather than masking symptoms with medication.  Whether you are in serious pain or looking to restore your body’s natural balance, we invite you to come experience chiropractic treatment and find the relief you’re looking for.

Microcurrent Therapy

Dr. Paul M. Vassa at Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness uses microcurrent therapy to help patients who are healing from injuries to the soft tissue or dealing with chronic pain. The treatment resembles electrical stimulation therapy, because electrodes are placed onto the skin in affected areas.  However, this therapy is gentle and the microcurrent is so small patients don’t feel it.
A body’s natural electric current is disrupted when injury or disease occurs. The microcurrent used in this therapy works by simulating the electrical signals that occur naturally in a healthy body. This helps an injured body heal faster, and is also an effective way to decrease inflammation and relieve pain.  Microcurrent therapy is a great treatment for muscle spasms occurring in the back or neck. It works by gently relaxing the muscle and allowing it to return to its normal state.  This treatment is typically scheduled in short therapy sessions spread out over a course of weeks.

Workers Compensation Injuries

Whether you’re on the road, playing a sport, or at work, accidents happen. Fortunately, Dr. Paul M. Vassa DC of Vassa Chiropractic is trained to deal with underlying issues that potentially could be missed by medical doctors. In addition to uncovering underlying issues, he also handles the healing process without the need for addictive pain pills and potentially risky surgery. If you aren’t sure what type of injury is a work-related injury, allow us to inform you.
A work-related injury is one that happened while you were doing something on behalf of your employer or otherwise in the course of employment. Most injuries that can be classified as work-related are those that occur at the workplace, but also may occur in company-owned trucks and other locations as long as the employee was doing something related to his or her job. Chiropractic is an excellent way of dealing with workers compensation issues. Locating the source of your injury could be the difference between fixing an issue and living with something for a long period of time.
If you have questions or concerns regarding work injury treatment, please give us a call. To learn about services provided at the practice, visit www.drvassa.comfor more information. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Relieving the pressure from pinched nerves is one of the primary goals of chiropractic. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most common workplace injuries, and at Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness in Holbrook, we provide people with safe, minimally invasive relief while getting their bodies in the optimal position to heal naturally.
The nerve that travels from our necks to our thumbs and first three fingers is called the median nerve. It stretches through the carpal tunnel, which is made up of the wrist bones and an inelastic band of connective tissue. Blockages in this canal or swelling on the outside of it constrict the median nerve. As a result, shocks, pain, tingling, and numbness may be felt throughout the arm, and control of the fingers and thumbs may be compromised.
Pain and other symptoms of a pinched nerve will not necessarily occur in the same location as the pinch. Dr. Vassa will want to conduct a thorough examination to determine whether the problem really is in the carpal tunnel. If it is, overuse is generally the cause. The patient may be assigned rest and therapeutic exercises. Electrical stimulation can also reduce swelling from overuse.
Paul M. Vassa, D.C., operates Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness at 233 Union Ave, Suite 102, Holbrook, New York, 11741. To schedule an appointment call 631-664-6841 or visit Dr. Vassa online.

Spinal Anatomy

We’re glad that our patients are interested in learning more about the benefits of chiropractic. At the Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Holbrook, we believe that when patients are educated, they can work better with their doctors to ensure optimal health. To that end, we wanted to provide a basic run-down of how the spine is built.
The spinal column is made up of bones, called vertebrae, with spongy discs in between. There are twenty-six vertebrae which move independently, all but the top two of which have intervening discs. The top two vertebrae are the atlas vertebra, which moves the head up and down, and the axis vertebra, which moves it from side to side. They and the next five vertebrae are called the cervical vertebrae and form the neck bones. The twelve vertebrae below them are the thoracic vertebrae and have ribs branching off them. The lower five vertebrae are the largest and are called the lumbar vertebrae. At the bottom of the spinal column are the sacrum and the coccyx, which are both made up of multiple vertebrae fused together. The spinal cord is the bundle of nerves which runs through a canal created by protrusions in back of the vertebrae, and joints between the protrusions link them all together.

Spinal Decompression

At Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness, Dr. Paul M. Vassa DC utilizes spinal decompression therapy for low back pain or pain management for a bulging or herniated disc. Spinal decompression therapy is a nonsurgical procedure where the spine is stretched and relaxed intermittently in a controlled manner. During the session, the patient will remain clothed and lie on a motorized table, only the lower half is able to move.
The theory of spinal decompression therapy is that this process creates pressure within the disc itself, which is thought to have two potential benefits: pulls the herniated or bulging disc material back into the disc, and promotes the passage of healing nutrients, into the disc and fosters a better healing environment. The patient should never feel never during or after the decompression therapy, although they should feel a stretch in the spine.

What is Whiplash?

Though whiplash is usually the result of an automobile accident, a person can develop whiplash from participating in high-impact activities where extreme acceleration-deceleration forces might be applied to the cervical spine. The most common symptom of whiplash is neck pain, which can vary from tingling, stiffness, reduced range of motion or upper back pain. Because whiplash symptoms aren’t always present, it’s important to visit Dr. Paul M. Vassa DC at Vassa Chiropractic & Wellness to receive a proper diagnosis.
If you are driving a car and suddenly become rear-ended, the rapid forward and backward movement of the head and neck can lead to a prolonged period of pain. Whiplash symptoms may present itself after an injury, or can even be delayed for up to 24 hours after impact. If you notice symptoms of pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates into the shoulder, arm, or hand, seek treatment immediately. The method for treating whiplash will depend on the severity of the condition.
If you have questions or concerns regarding recovery from an automobile accident or whiplash, please give us a call.
